This weekend residents of Cinquera participated in a popular referendum in order to decide if they are in favor of or against metallic mining. Ninety-nine percent of the people voted against permitting mining projects on their land.
Even though the Fundación El Dorado and Minerales Torogoz, financed by the mining company Oceana Gold, are operating in their outskirts, the results of the vote were clear.
These agencies, through royalties, are looking to win support and sympathy from the communities close to their El Dorado mining project.
Cinquera has become the first municipality in Cabañas to initiate this consultation process and declare their land free of mining.
