ADES Santa Marta - Finishing the reforestation campaign: “A Tree, A Student, A Family”

Close to two thousand fruit and forest trees were delivered to residents of the Santa Rosa community in Sensuntepeque, Cabañas. The were planted along the sides of the main road in El Guayabo, in school centers, and in homes in the region.

The facilitator, Marvin Pineda, explained that the objective of the project was to work together with residents of Santa Rosa to improve the environmental conditions where families live.

The campaign, “A Tree, A Student, A Family,” was carried out in Santa Rosa with four reforestation activities-- one in the small village of La Pozona in coordination with the Divino Niño church; another in the center of Santa Rosa via The Church of Fatima; the third activity in coordination with Cristo Rey Church; and the last with the support of the Catholic School, San Francisco de Sales.

This campaign is part of the project “Reducing socio-environmental vulnerability through the implementation of soil and water conservation projects, reforestation, agroforestry, and governance” executed by ADES, together with the Fondo de la Iniciativa para las Américas (FIAES).

Comprehensive water and sanitation management

Using a watershed management and planning approach, ADES’ Comprehensive water and sanitation management Program accompanies communities in the following processes:

Identifying possible sources of drinking water
Checking the quantity and quality of accessible water
Feasibility studies and detecting water-recharge zones
Technical support in developing potable water systems
Training in the administration of communal water systems
Support in the management of public and private institutions
Constructing potable water systems

Access to quality, sufficient drinking water remains limited in Salvadoran communities, and is the key challenge confronting organizations like ADES that accompany communities in developing water management processes.

Leadership, organization and incidence

Promote inclusive and horizontal leadership, with an emphasis on women and youth, that strengthen community organization. • Promote processes of political incidence, vindication of human rights and defense of the territories, in alliance with social movements.

Food sovereignty and agroecology

Promote the adoption of an agroecological model that contributes to the achievement of sustainable local agricultural systems that optimize and stabilize production, as the basis of food sovereignty.

Comprehensive water and sanitation management

Strengthen community participation in improving water and sanitation management, contributing to the exercise of the human right to water.
